How to Configure Location Types

Learn how to create and manage Location Types in the Loop Experience Platform to structure your site hierarchy, manage physical locations, and enable response, conversation and ticket routing

Written by Jordan Parsons

Summary

Location Types define the structural categories and organizational tiers used to classify physical sites within the Loop Experience Platform. Establishing Location Types normalizes site hierarchy across multi-site operations, allowing Account Admins to accurately organize physical Locations, group sites into Location Groups, and govern routing and reporting workflows. This guide applies to Owners and Account Admins configuring account-level site structures in Admin / Settings.

Prerequisites & Permissions

  • Primary Audience: Owners and Account Administrators.

  • User Roles & Permissions: Requires Account Admin permissions to create, edit, or delete Location Types within platform settings.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Navigate to Location Types Settings

  1. Log in to the Loop Experience Platform.

  2. From the main navigation menu, navigate to Admin / Settings.

  3. Under the Account Settings section, click Locations and select the Location Types tab.

Step 2: Create a New Location Type

  1. On the Location Types page, click the + Add Location Type button.

  2. In the Type Name field, enter a standardized category label representing your organizational tier (e.g., Region, Property, Building, Department, or Terminal).

  3. (Optional) Enter a brief description to clarify the intended scope of this location category for other administrators.

  4. Click Save to create the Location Type.

Step 3: Assign Location Types to Physical Locations

  1. Navigate to Admin / Settings > Locations and select the Locations tab.

  2. Click on an existing location name or click + Add Location.

  3. In the location configuration panel, open the Location Type dropdown menu.

  4. Select the appropriate Location Type created in Step 2.

  5. Click Save Changes.

💡 TIP: Establish and standardize your complete list of Location Types before creating individual physical Locations or building Location Groups to ensure consistent data hierarchy across all deployment phases.

⚠️ NOTE: Modifying or deleting a Location Type does not delete the physical Locations assigned to it, but unassigned Locations will lose their operational categorization until updated.

Technical & Operational Details

How Location Architecture Impacts Platform Operations

Understanding how Location Types connect to Locations and Location Groups is essential for managing platform workflows:

  • Physical Locations: Serve as the anchor for physical feedback kiosks, dynamic QR codes, and digital touchpoints. They connect frontline staff to local inbox feeds and ticket queues.

  • Location Groups: Aggregate individual Locations into operational or geographic clusters (e.g., East Coast Facilities) for bulk administrative tasks, comparative reporting, and shared project governance.

  • Automated Routing: Location assignments drive automated Survey Actions, routing incoming tickets and real-time messages directly to staff based on site permissions.

  • Analytics & Reporting: Location Types and Groups dictate how experience data is sliced across Dashboard Projects and Survey Insights, allowing leadership to analyze performance at macro regional levels or drill down into individual site details.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Can I edit a Location Type after physical Locations have been assigned to it?

A: Yes. Renaming or updating a Location Type updates the category label across all assigned physical Locations instantly without interrupting active ticket routing or historical survey data.

Q: What is the difference between a Location Type and a Location Group?

A: A Location Type is a category label used to classify physical site tiers (e.g., Department or Region). A Location Group is a custom cluster of specific physical sites grouped together for shared reporting, permissions, or campaign distribution (e.g., Airport Hubs).

Q: Do Location Types restrict frontline user permissions in the Unified Inbox?

A: User access permissions are assigned directly to individual Locations or Location Groups in Admin / Settings, restricting frontline staff to viewing incoming messages and tickets for their designated sites only.
